Gloucester Productions proudly announces the 2024 presentation of the enthralling classic, Peter Schaffer’s “Amadeus,” with the talented Alan Committie portraying Salieri. The captivating drama of ambition, envy, and retribution makes its grand appearance in Johannesburg at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre, starting from March 8th until April 7th. Following this, the play moves to Cape Town’s Theatre on the Bay, delighting audiences from April 12th to May 18th.
Since its premiere in 1979, “Amadeus” has captivated audiences all over the world, including a memorable 1981 production at Johannesburg’s Alhambra Theatre and an Academy Award-winning film adaptation in 1984. This Tony award-winning play promises a mix of suspense, comedy, enthralling music, and compelling characters.
Set in the court of Emperor Joseph II, the play revolves around Antonio Salieri, the court composer, and the arrival of the exceptionally talented Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Illka Louw (costume design), Tineill Tredoux (costume coordination), Oliver Hauser (lighting), Nadine Minnaar (scenic elements), and Gideon Lombard (sound design) are among the talented members of Geoffrey Hyland’s award-winning team directing the play. Working with a distinguished cast, including two-time Fleur du Cap Best Actor winner Alan Committie as Salieri, Hyland adds a new perspective to this classic.
Joining Committie on stage are Aidan Scott as Mozart, Lisa Tredoux as Constanze, Mark Elderkin as Emperor Joseph II, Phumi Mncayi as Orsini Rosenburg, Andreas Damm as Van Swieten, Miguel de Sampaio as Von Strack, and Léa Blerk as Katerina. “Amadeus” is a collaborative effort by Gloucester Productions, Carolyn Steyn, Siv Ngesi, and with permission from Concord Theatricals Ltd.
Committie expresses his excitement about portraying the complex character of Salieri, filled with passion, rage, jealousy, and righteousness. “Amadeus” is not just a theatrical event but an essential experience, with the future of such high-caliber local productions uncertain.
