History in Greece with first Gay Wedding

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Greece since February 15, 2024. After a period of substantial advocacy and discussion on the rights of the LGBT community, the Greek Parliament passed the legislation. The law allows same-sex couples not only to marry but also to adopt children.  Greek society, historically influenced by socially conservative values and the views of the Orthodox Church, has undergone a significant shift with this change.  Despite some opposition, the move towards legalising same-sex marriage marks a notable step for LGBT rights in Greece and aligns with wider European trends towards inclusivity and equality.

In a landmark moment, a gay couple’s wedding has become a historical first in Greece, following the nation’s recent legalisation of same-sex marriage and adoption.

Gavriliadis and Elefsiniotis, who have been in a relationship for two decades and share three children, were vocal supporters of the marriage equality bill. This legislation has positioned Greece as the inaugural Christian Orthodox majority country to embrace same-sex marriage and adoption rights.

The couple celebrated their union in the presence of their family and friends. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also extended his congratulations to them on this significant occasion.

The legal requirement of publishing their wedding notice was fulfilled in a newspaper shortly after the bill’s enactment.

We extend our best wishes to the couple for a joyous honeymoon, filled with the exuberance and charm reminiscent of “Mamma Mia!”
