Serena Steinhauer is a rising star!

At the tender age of 22, Serena Steinhauer is already an accomplished singer, dancer, actor, and pianist, and she can now add ‘writer’ to her repertoire as she makes her debut in her original play, The Undone, at Theatre on the Square in Sandton for a limited season, from Tuesday, June 27th to Saturday, July 8th, 2023.

When we look in the mirror, who do we truly see?

The Undone follows three brave women who dare to voice what has been left unsaid. In these experiences, we see what it means to be resilient in the face of adversity. Their stories are an homage to life, with its humour, sadness, grief, and triumph.

The Undone, written and performed by Serena Steinhauer and produced by Daphne Kuhn, is inspired by overcoming adversity.

The Undone, directed by Alan Swerdlow and featuring original music by Bryan Schimmel, brings together three theatrical pioneers in an exhilarating, thought-provoking play.

Serena exclaims, “Writing The Undone has been a labour of pure love.” It’s a narrative that’s close to my heart and heritage, brought to life by a team I could only have imagined. Most importantly, it aims to emphasise that being resilient in life is a personal decision that we can all make, and that we all have the ability to overcome any adversity that we may experience. “I am ecstatic to be able to tell this story through my favourite medium, live theatre.”
Alan Swerdlow, award-winning director, adds, “It has been deeply satisfying to work on a new, original text that explores uncommon, disregarded, or forgotten individuals.”

When asked about the music included in the concert, another acclaimed award-winner on the Creative Team, maestro Bryan Schimmel, expounds, “The music is completely original and composed for the never-seen piano.” It’s been an experimental process because each piece is its own organism, with its own time period, flavour, and style.”

Audiences will be riveted as Serena digs deep to take them on this voyage of discovery through the eyes of these resilient female characters, thanks to her musical ability, dynamic stage presence, and unquestionable knack for storytelling.

RESILIENCE IS A CHOICE FOR THE UNDONE!

Serena will travel to New York City in August, shortly after completing The Undone, to pursue her dreams. She is preparing to begin her Master of Fine Arts in Acting at PACE University’s Actor’s Studio Drama School, which has produced a slew of stars, including Bradley Cooper.

But first, she wants to leave South Africa with the experience of sharing this powerful and uplifting story in her original work The Undone with her beloved hometown of Johannesburg on her bucket list.

Serena concludes, “It’s still surreal to me that what I’ve always wanted to do is now coming true.” I wish I could tell Serena, her 6-year-old daughter, that she did it! That she would be able to perform her own work in front of a community she admires, acquire two degrees from prestigious American universities, and eventually call New York City home. I’d also inform her that the path will be packed with tenacity, perseverance, and conquering hurdles along the way. Despite these challenges, the dream CAN come true.”
