De Waterkant, Cape Town’s trendy “Gay Village,” has adopted South Africa’s new LGBT flag as their own.
South Africa’s new gay flag was launched in December at the popular MCQP party at Cape Town Stadium. De Waterkant soon followed with one of it’s premier gay establishments Crew Bar hoisting the flag the very next day, before long, the new flag sprouted up all over the bustling cobblestoned quarter. Crew Bar & Bronx Action Bar also featured the flag at their New Years Parties.
“It has been exciting to see how gay establishments welcomed the flag. I can already see how it is uniting different parts of our community… the flag is also set to fly during Cape Town Pride 2011, and will be taken to Johannesburg and the rest of the country soon after.” said designer Huge Brockman.
Brockman also stated that the aim of the new flag design is to add value to the South African queer community by giving them a symbol that is uniquely theirs, a symbol that would represent their story, their lives and issues to the rest of the world.
Brockman also stated that in the coming weeks, a few events will be hosted (in Cape Town’s gay village) that will attract local & international media and not to forget Cape Town residents, where the flag will be promoted and sold during the build up to Cape Town Pride 2011. Profits of flag sales will be donated to Cape Town Pride 2011.
