Gay Hanky Code

Coloured handkerchiefs worn in the back pocket use to be a shorthand for sexual preferences, known as “flagging.” Worn on the left, they use to indicate that the wearer plays the active role, and on the right, the passive role.

We said USE TO BE but reportedly this code is still being used in some parts of South Africa so here’s a reminder what the different colours mean.

HOWEVER Beware: the meanings of the minor colors can vary.
